“I have always been big on traveling, but I never really took the time to do it. I spent a few years in Germany as a child, and my family liked to travel to new places. It helps clear out the mind and structure a new perspective of life and the world we live in. As a writer and student, experiences and traveling opens me to new ideas that I never would have considered otherwise. The time we take to experience the world gives us the knowledge of how to apply our education in a real way.”

I have only ever been in school and as much as I love it, sometimes things do not work out the way we expect while we are getting our degree(s). The English program I am in at the University of Minnesota-Duluth is going into suspension due to the college budget cuts, but that does not mean that I need to stop my education until I am accepted to another college. I want my graduate degree in Creative Writing, and that is an absolute in my mind. I just love it and want to be in an environment to learn as much as I can about writing. Even in my academic writing, I have learned so much about myself and what I value. There are some things, though, that we cannot learn at a college.
Last January I went to London for a study abroad trip. It was always somewhere I wanted to go, but I never took the time or money to do so. It is one of the most wondrous things I have ever done in college. Now I have a chance to travel more. I could go to conferences and writing workshops, back to Europe, or any assortment of other activities that will further me in college and life.
Sure, the program suspension is unfortunate, but sometimes it is negative experiences that provide us the path to greater fortune.

How would you like to inspire others?
So often people, especially students, get lost in the idea that they cannot do things they would love to do. They just utter the words “I will one day,” and carry on. While this may not be a space that I purposefully created for myself, it is one that I will take advantage of. I want to inspire people to see the world they will ultimately apply their college education to. Sometimes walking away and coming back from a different angle helps realign the problems that students face in their college world.
