Up until I began my journey at the University of Texas, I had never questioned what I really wanted to do with my life. I had a plan for my career and I was set to do it, too stubborn to consider a change. During the second semester of my freshman year, I began to have doubts about my conviction to be a doctor. I met so many people and learned about so many careers I had never heard of before. I was so fortunate to have doubted, to have stopped, taken a breath, and allowed myself to question my plans.

What are your passions? This may seem like a simple question at first, but when you begin to search your soul, you may find some gaps. Up to this point, my life has been severely lacking in experiences. You cannot know your passions if you don’t test yourself. How can you know that you are not an artist if you never picked up a paintbrush? How can you know you don’t have a passion for romance novels if you never pick up a book? In my case, I had never questioned whether or not I wanted to be a doctor until I got to my second semester as a college freshman. It is common enough for students to change their minds about the career they are seeking, but up until this point, I have never even thought of an alternate path. I had never allowed myself to believe I could be anything else. During this time of uncertainty, I have come to accept that it is okay to not have a plan, and instead to let life’s surprises lead the way.
