In 2019, what area are you “making space” for?
“This fall, I’ll finally get my shot to create a large-scale, multimedia project.
Although I completed a BA in Economics, I realized at the end of my sophomore year that new media, art and storytelling were more than a hobby. They are my true passion. I followed up that realization with 36 credits in Art, Videography, Design, and Coding.
In May, I was accepted to the Digital Art and New Media MFA program at UC Santa Cruz. Although I have created dozens of pieces, this will be my first chance to finish a long-term project. It will be something like a mobile app or small-scale social media platform. All I have to do is seize the opportunity.
So, In 2019 I am making space for projects.”

In high school, I was certain I wanted to be an economist. I took every related AP course available. Meanwhile, I followed up a lifetime of art classes with art-related extracurriculars and electives.
At university, I quickly got involved with the economics department, starting study groups and attending Econ Club meetings. In my free time, I gave myself permission to take risks, and spent many hours a week writing, illustrating, and marketing a serial web novel under a pen name.
My sophomore year of college, I achieved an internship at the US Department of Treasury through my hard work and dedication. I had wonderful mentors and gained insight not just into current economic trends but also into how an office and a real job work.
Every night, completely exhausted, I would drag my laptop out for a Photoshop tutorial.
I finally saw the true pattern of my passions. Moreover, learning Photoshop showed me my medium – the digital realm. I shifted my focus. Though I went on to finish my economics degree, I also took many arts and new media courses. I came to know my own mind better. This new path culminated in my acceptance to the UCSC’s Digital Arts and New Media MFA program, but that isn’t where my story ends. For the first time in my life, I can center art as my main focus, rather than a side hobby.
Now that I finally have the opportunity to do something big, bold, and creative as my top priority, I can’t waste it. Making the most of my graduate degree means designing and launching a major project and then guiding it to its completion.

How would you like to inspire others?
I hope that I inspire others to realize their true passions. Take a step back and recognize what you turn to time and time again. You can explore and discover it.
For those who know their direction, I’d like to inspire them to clarify plans and get organized so they can achieve big goals. With organization and follow-through, daily work can turn itself into significant projects. For those who have yet to discover their passion, organization can provide time to explore.
Everyone has something that makes their heart pound and their mind wander, and I’d like to inspire people to make space for that thing.

Even though it’s not possible to add more hours to your day, it can feel like it when you get organized. Finding a first-class organizational tool has the same effect. Digital notes will mean that I don’t have to search through paper pages to find a fact for the test. Instead, I can just use ctrl + find. Centralized bookmarks will mean that I don’t have to figure out which browser or computer I used to save a valuable source.
LifeSpace’s features will shrink the time I spend organizing and working, giving me more time to fill up with projects.
