In 2019, what area are you “making space” for?
“This year, I’m making space for Black women healing into their true selves.
This is important because I am a real-life example of this. I found that by putting who I am uniquely before my race, gender, and ethnicity, I was able to make the road of healing and growing a more possible journey for me. This motivates me to continue into the next phase of the journey by sharing it for all the Black women traveling a similar road as I towards better things and higher selves.”

I grew up in a world of binaries. Between going to white schools, living in spaces with few Caribbean folk, and always being looked down upon by elders, there was almost never room to just be authentically who I am.
I would spend my teen years begging for acceptance into spaces which only wanted me to conform. It was only after I came to college that the gradual shift towards autonomy helped me towards embracing my true self without needing to ask for others’ permission.

How would you like to inspire others?
I’d like to inspire others to make space in their lives for themselves by using the work I do on campus. This includes my time working as Lit for Life president. My team and I work towards creating spaces for inclusivity, self-love, and passionate, creative advocacy through multimodal literature.
My hope is that by promoting what I do through campus activities such as Lit for Life as well as my personal journey, my audience and myself will collectively embody healing, growth, self-kindness and the overall infinity of who we are as an upcoming generation of beautiful humans.
